Honda lawnmower hydrostatic transmission oil change and axle seal replacement
A detailed video demonstrating the removal of a Honda Master Series/ pro commercial lawnmower hydrostatic transmission. In this video I also demonstrate how to replace the axle seals as many of these older or often heavily used mowers will develop leaks on the axle seals.
00:00 - Start
00:41 - Shut off fuel and drain carb
01:11 - Remove rear wheel assemblies
01:40 - Remove transmission cover
02:26 - Remove input shaft roll pin
03:31 - Disconnect drive engagement cable
04:03 - Remove rear height adjusters and transmission hangers
06:09 - Cleaning and preparing transmission
09:05 - Transmission seal removal
10:39 - Transmission axle seal installation
13:14 - Draining transmission fluid
14:05 - Refilling and flushing transmission
16:21 - Bench bleeding transmission
18:18 - Verifying drive cable adjustment
18:56 - Transmission operational bleed procedure
19:39 - Post-operational bleed fluid check and adjustment
20:33 - Final drive test
Contrary to Honda's recommendations of never changing the hydrostatic fluid in these extremely well built transmissions that I recommend it should be changed at least once every 5 years or 300 hours of use whichever comes first. In the video I wasn't sure precisely how much hydrostat fluid is inside the transmission but I finally found the spec in the service manual. Total fluid is 11.84 fl oz which aligns roughly with what I put back into the tranny (remember we can't get 100% of the fluid out as there will be remnants inside the tranny).
Symptoms of my particular mower that warranted a full service were tiny fluid leaks on the ground, slower than normal transmission speeds, and delayed engagement. The fluid in my lawnmower was NEVER replaced and I performed 3 drain and fills on the transmission to get the fluid clean enough for long-term service.
Use ONLY genuine Honda hydrostatic fluid for best performance and to avoid damage.
Note that this procedure is ONLY for Honda Master series or Pro series (namely "HRxxx - HX, HXA, HMA, HXH" hydrostatic transmission-equipped lawnmowers that have a SHAFT input drive. If you have a HRR/HRN/HRX series then this procedure does not apply to your model.

A lengthy video of me using a HS720 single stage blower on multiple driveways and a long sidewalk blowing the snow from snowmaggedon 2024 in the Canadian Prairies. We've had a massive drought with no precipitation from the previous year so seeing a 20 cm dump in city (rare) is a welcome surprise. We previously blew the accumulations of snow so all that was left was about 4-5 inches of fresh sno...

My first test run with my new Honda HSS724A wheel drive snowblower. Purchased this unit to supplement my smaller, but very trusty Honda HS622 track drive unit. However, the 2023/2024 season has been particularly dry with never been seen drough...

A video detailing the procedures needed to replace the transmission axle shaft seal on a Honda HS622 snowblower. The procedures are likely the same for sister models of Hondas such as the HSS622 and the HS522. I also outline how to drain and refill the transmission oil. Draining the transmission makes for a much cleaner repair job because oil won't be leaking everywhere and it's a great time to...

Not sure why I don't have any fluid came out of the check hole. I replaced the pan and strainer. Filled through the fill hole until fluid start coming out of the hole. Turn the engine on to drain the old fluid out. Refill oil back to the tranny and run the engine again until I see fresh oil coming out. Refill oil until it started dripping out of the fill hole. I open the check hole to let the excess fluid out. Ran the engine until transmission temp is at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the check plug and nothing came out. Am I doing something wrong?

Am I the only one that's going to notice what you did absolutely terribly wrong... That hose is full of air. And you just pumped all that are into the system. The proper thing to do would have been to use an injection device that is meant for this specific thing. It's not that expensive and it threads on there to where once it's under pressure you can then add it into the system without putting all that air. Although I suppose if you're going to be bleeding the entire system anyway to find where the leak is and fix it I guess it doesn't matter

14:25 adjusting the cable. This is done with the parking brake foot pedal off correct? My shoes have a big gap so you were saying to back off the adjuster under the truck. The thing is my two adjuster nuts are not even making contact with the bracket. So they are already loose but yet I still have the big gap. Any ideas having a devil of a time with this.

Hey everybody, just thought I'd update this comment in case someone else experienced the engine light staying on after installing a new thermostat. When I originally posted the comment below, I had replaced my thermostat by following Pierce's excellent video. After replacing the thermostat, on my wife's 2010 Honda Civic, the engine light continued to display until we drove her car about 10 to 15 miles, today, and it finally turned off. So, if the engine light is staying on, just go for a test drive at least for 10 to 15 miles or longer until it turns off. Hello Pierce, thanks for your clear and concise thermostat replacement video. My "engine light" came on and I took it to a Honda dealership. They told me that my thermostat was staying open and needed to replace. Their cost was $750 ! I decided to replace it myself using your video as a guide. I replaced it easily enough and have added coolant to the system. I took it for a test drive but the "engine light" continues to stay on. What do you do when this happens? Can I reset this light myself or should I take it to another Honda dealership and see if they can decide what's wrong? Thanks, Gary

With your guideline I successfully replaced mine on my 13.5 year old NR-180A. There isn't an O ring on the top, and there aren't small screws to remove the heat flow sensor, just one big screw that connects it to the pipe. Other than that it was all the same. One thing I would add, is you can connect hoses to the outlets, direct them to a bucket and prevent a few headaches with trying to catch all of the water that is draining. Thank you

the first belt is not a timing belt and you dont need to line up anything with it. you could barrow that tool from an auto parts store you shouldnt even have to take that pulley off. Just slip the belt over and around it, put it around the top pulley, check your timing marks and dont jack you motor up by the oil pan!!You must now that you don't really know what your doing so why are you attempting to to produce a how-to video on something you are unfamiliiar with? The idler puller is what you need to loosen instead of removing the pulley. Oil is suppose to be "pooling" in the hydrolic belt tensioner! Thats what makes it expand! You are lost DUDE
